Young Seedling growing inside Majura Nature Park, right beside Yellow Box Eucalyptus. Identified by Waltraud and Barb as " Service Tree". If correct then this is yet ANOTHER Woody weed species, spreading into our Nature park, most probably spread by Birds. This specimen was treated with Herbicide by Cut n Dab.
Hi Barb, Because Google list this as both Cormus and Sorbus, both are "Service tree" with Identical images ? Has this Genus name been revised taxonomically, or is this a Google booboo / glitch ? Wondering now ??
Cormus does not come up in Atlas of Living Australia, not even as a synonym. Wikipedia has Cormus domestica as a separate entity from Sorbus. Let's leave this one to the European taxonomists.
The genus name in my old German plant books is still "Sorbus"; below the entry of the ACT Census of vascular plants Sorbus domestica ROSACEAE Exotic [EA] 2006 I.R.Telford 10835 Service Tree https://canberra.naturemapr.org/users/12141, I'm puzzled about the location: the background in the photos and the map are not corresponding? I tackled Service trees east / uphill of the Fair before; it is certainly not a new weed species for Mt Majura although not as common as for instance hawthorn ...
Thanks Waltraud. Photo Background doesn't match because taken after removal, away from site where it was growing. I mentioned "New" because the alternative Genus name "Cormus" did not show up in CNM. If I had searched Sorbus, it probably would show up. Minor point, apologies for any confusion.
