Multistem deciduous shrub with spines on stems, matches description of B. vulgaris, fruiting, removed by cutting and dabbing with glyphosate. One large shrub at this location and a smaller one nearby on the creekline.

I added a scan of the specimen, thanks Barb; will pass it on to Isobel. My observations: leaves irregularly toothed, some leaves without teeth; spines up to 3 in a group, some 15mm long.

Identified by Peter Jobson of the NSW Herbarium as Berberis floribunda.
Not deciduous, despite the colouring of the leaves.
Persistent style 1 to 2 mm long on the end of the fruit is one characteristic which distinguishes it from B. vulgaris.

Hi Barb it is certainly not B aquifolium which has compound leaves. I mentioned B aquifolium only in our correspondence because it has sometimes red / yellow / orange leaves which are not necessarily an indicator for a deciduous plant

I tend to agree with Isobel Crawford and Peter Jobson of the NSW herbarium who id-ed the specimen that you collected as B. floribunda.
