I have added a photo of the cocoon the caterpillar made. 14 January 2021 - Moth emerged from cocoon and 3 photos added

It is a Lasiocampidae species, but we only know the larvae of 20 out of the 76 named Australian species, see http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lasi/lasi-cats.html
If you can take it into protective custody and rear it to get the moth, we could identify the species.

I have had it in a mesh bug house. The caterpillar made a cocoon (see added photo) on 23 December 2020.
