Its body colour is pale grey with a reddish-brown tinge to the sides. A series of irregularly paired, pale blotches along the back and pale stripes along each side. The lip scales have heat sensitive pits. It grows to 2.5 m in length and is often found in trees or rocky outcrops where it may be seen basking in the early morning and late afternoon. It also shelters in tree hollows, hollow logs, rock crevices, rabbit burrows and rural buildings although populations have declined across its ranges due to habitat loss, fox predation and loss of small mammals. The Inland Carpet Python produces approximately 20 eggs per clutch and incubates them for an average of 70 days. It reproduces every three years and feeds on a range of vertebrates including, mice, rats, rabbits, possums and nestling birds. Juvenile pythons prey on small lizards.
