hi M, not L japonica which I know only too well - L. fragrantissima more likely. I cut and painted and collected the specimen for proper id; but somehow I managed to loose it. This was the only specimen and I haven't see one before in the reserve. Will continue to watch out for it...
V. tinus does have paired opposite leaves; see for instance Viburnum tinus (Laurustinus); however as far as I'm aware all the V tinus we recorded in the reserve east of the Fair seem to have a more shiny leaf surface; may be some are more hairy than others.
