Gosh you are lucky to see a Kangaroo I hardly ever see any since the 2021 cull now the Directorate is putting large tags on very sensitive ears how cruel. All I see on Farrer Ridge is weeds weeds and more weeds that should be suppressed under legislation but nothing is done to suppress them. Not a good way to manage a grassy woodland that was in much better condition 10 years ago.
Not many weeds where I saw these guys, in fact, probably the best patch of thick kangaroo grass I've seen almost anywhere in Canberra, with a nice scattering of Yellow Box and Blakely's Red Gum. Quite a nice area overall, but not the case in all parts of Farrer Ridge, I know.
Yes that has always been one of the best grassy areas but it has deteriorated over the last few years. When Themeda gets too matted it inhibits the growth of lilies, orchids and other small forbs.
Yeah sure @julielindner that's fine. By the way, the tagged roo in this sighting is an adult female who has been treated with a trial contraceptive as part of a management program with the aim to limit population growth and hence reduce the amount of culling required in future years. The small kangaroo with her is likely to be the young that was present in her pouch when she was treated last September.
