Some Noctuinae larvae are this size, and have no superficial pattern and burrow into the soil for daytime protection and pupation.

@ibaird it is an assumption based on how it has been recorded here previously and how it appears similar to images of caterpillars. With a diet of potatoes it also fits how I found potatoes nearby. I am a bit certain, but I guess that it shouldn't be confirmed until we see the emerged adult.
