This tree had a trunk of about 30cm, but others were much larger, some with gnarled roots at their bases.

You wouldn't happen to have an image of an adult foliage would you?? I think it may be a coachwood (Ceratopetalum apetalum)

The last photo is adult foliage as far as I know, from low hanging branch of large tree
