Very agitated Gang-gangs were heard at ANBG, about 100 metres away from us. When we located the birds, they were seen close together on a branch high up in a tree and were squawking non-stop. The male was also raising his head up and down whilst opening and closing his wings. The birds eventually quietened down and by the time we walked through the bush to the base of the tree, the Gang-gangs had relocated higher up within it. A Cockatoo was then seen on a branch close to the Gang-gangs and looked to be edging along the branch towards one of several hollows in the tree.
Following sighting 4410390 shows the male Gang-gang flying directly at the Cockatoo, which eventually flew off. The Gang-gangs then flew back close to the hollow. Possibly a nesting hollow? It’s unclear if the initial squawking and display was due to the Cockatoo being close by, or for some other reason. These images are not the best as they were taken from a distance on a wet and windy day. Thanks to Marcus Leach for locating the birds and helping with the sighting.
Hi TimL, there is in deed a site nearby which you have identified in your subsequent posting. I have been keeping my eye out on this site for about three weeks now and a few days ago the female popped her head out as I passed by. We have been aware of a couple of sites in this general area over the last couple of years and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos have always been a problem for the nesting GGs. Many thanks for the postings, Chris
