I think I see hairs hanging down along the sides, making it Lasiocampidae. Please can you rear it in protective custody to get the moth, as we only know the caterpillars of 20 out of the 75 named species in that family ?

I have it in protective custody and it has pupated.

Did it make a cocoon or burrow under the soil to pupate? A photo of its pupal shelter would be good.

It's a cocoon on the side of the container. Wil try to take a photo.

Most moths have silky cocoons, but some of the Lasicampidae have papery cocoons.
Interesting to see which it is.

Hi Don, The moth emerged on 1 March 2021. I've added photos of the moth and of the cocoon.

Wonderful: congratulations. I have popped a copy of your interesting caterpillar underside photo into
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lasi/nasuta.html
I hope that is OK? Thanks, Don

Of course. Thanks Don. You may have noticed a further sighting. I've had at least six of these caterpillars on my (relatively newly planted-15 months ago) Acacia.
