The recent publication of Part 9 Moths of Victoria Noctoidea (C) provides significantly more information about Proteuxoa spp. and a comprehensive guide to identification within this genus. Identification of Proteuxoa relies heavily on the shape, size and colour of the distinctive reniform marks on the forewing and also the presence/absence, size and colour of any associated orbicular marks This speciemen has a large white orbicular mark and a distinctive two-lobed white and black reniform mark located posterior to it. It also has dark head with a lighter centre panel.with darker edges either side. These characteriestics to my eye are most similar to the species shown as Proteixoa sp.5 group on the accompanying disc to the new Part 9 Moths of Victoria (MoV). I do not think it matches P. hypochalchis well because that species has a broad dark slightly reniform mark different in shape and a much less distinct and smaller associatied orbicular mark. Also, P. hypochalcis has a head in both sexes which is a similar colour to the thorax and the rest of the wings and is not distinctive dark and marked as described above. MoV describes P. sp(5) as a complex varied group which requires further work to distinguish species. Therefore I'm suggesting this specimen is Proteuxoa sp. possibly the Proteuxoa sp.(5) group.
