Sorry Betty I didn't squash the leaves - definitely not a Cassinia

The habit looks more like a Cassinia, though the leaves look nothing like Cassinia. Were the leaves aromatic when rubbed?

I ran the sighting through my key to plants of SE NSW, using plant height 1-3 m, leaves alternating up the stems, leaf length 0.15-0.4 cm and got 151 species in several families. Perhaps you should wait till it is flowering.
