Significant sighting

natureguy noted:

19 Mar 2020

Extremely rare vagrant to the ACT or anywhere inland. Only the 4th ACT record of this species. Also at a very bizarre location, away from a watercourse. A threatened species, declared Critically Endangered.

User's notes

This sighting was reported by a fellow ranger. he was just driving around and spotted the bird feeding. The recent flood in this area must of made it an attractive feeding ground. As the area ranger I thought it important to highlight such a rare find.

A remarkable sighting! Apparently a young bird (2-4yr old), or a temporary stop while migrating north cross-country? Possibly only the fourth record of this species in the ACT, others at Kellys Swamp (1977), Fyshwick Sewage Ponds (1989, 2016), A coastal shorebird species declared as Critically Endangered under the EPBC Act. Listed by eBird as the most infrequently bird observed in the ACT. If ID is confirmed should be submitted to COG's Rarities Panel for further endorsement.

Incredible record. I would highly encourage you to edit the notes attched to the sighting confirming location and date, and perhaps providing a bit of a description regarding the circumstances around the sighting - how you came across the bird, what it was doing, weather, the features of the environment that it was in (water, mud, food) etc. For a record like this it is critical that we document as much as we can and also so that it stands the test of time when people come back to use the data years down the track. A single record in Namadgi could easily be dismissed as an error down the track if it hasn't been properly documented.

Wow. Great record. This is near us, so I will keep my eyes peeled, particularly at our wetland. How did you take the photo? Just curious how close you got. Sandra
