Hi Tim, another new species for CNM - good spotting! This is not a common species and I have not seen it myself before, so very interesting. No collections of this species from around the ACT appear on the Atlas of Living Australia so I will check records at ANIC to see whether it has been collected previously in the region - it probably has (most collections don't end up in a database) but will update when I find out.
It is called an Epaulet Ant because the shoulders of the ant have bumps on them, reminiscent of epaulets. Cheers, Jon

Thanks for the identification and information Jon. I'll see if I can find a few more of these ants.

Hi again Tim, I have checked at ANIC and can find no previous records for the ACT, although there is a collection from Queanbeyan! While the ant seems to be fairly widespread, it is pretty patchy and not often collected. I tracked down your location and have made a collection on behalf of ANIC (I have the required permit) which will end up in the database. Cheers, Jon
