Thanks Christine. While the common name is Greenhead ant, they are not always green! The metallic sheen varies from green to bluey-purple. Cheers, Jon

Hi Christine - you were right to point out the red legs after all! I was working on some Rhytidoponera ants at ANIC the other day and realised my mistake, so have updated any CNM records which were incorrectly identified as Rhytidoponera metallica. Cheers, Jon

Thanks Jon, and thanks for all of your work identifying the ants. Many of the distinguishing features are a complete mystery to me, and you do an awesome job picking then out from photos - not always very clear photos too!
