Pantydia species show considerable variatiion in colour and pattern so can be challenging to identify. I have suggested this sighting is P. diemeni in this case mainly based on the shape of the pair of dark tick marks visible here on the trailing edge of the forewing near its base. Based on the images shown in the supporting discs for MoV (Part 8) females of the species in Pantydia show these marks whereas they are a different shape (e.g a dot) or absent in the males. In P. sparsa these marks have a distinctive cuirved shape whereas in P. diemeni (as in this speciimen) they are thicker and have a jagged shape. In P metaspila it is thicker again and has a distinct C shape. P. metsapila is regarded as having a primarily North Queensland distribution in Australia, whereas the ALA shows one record of P, metaspila from Melbourne (-this northern distributiion for P. metaspila is confirmed by Bold Systems 4.) based on the ALA distribution maps, P. sparsa and particularly P. diemeni have mainly southern distributions in Australia.

I note that Sighting No. 3381128 which we have identified as Pantydia sp.(genus) also shows this same dagger shaped marking suggesting it is a female.
