The ants looked to be interacting with the other insect (a scale?) on the branch rather than just walking over them

Hi SWishart, while not very metallic looking in the photo, the ants are very likely Rhytidoponera metallica. Sometimes they are very brightly metallic, other times just have a sheen. The ants were probably collecting honeydew from the other insects, which I think are some kind of leaf hopper (I'm sure someone will know!). Cheers, Jon
