Significant sighting

This is a new weed species for the ACT region - we are near its southern distribution limit in Australia. It is a reasonably widespread weed in south Africa and is now know from three locations along the Murrumbidgee

User's notes

Along the 4WD track on the western side of the Murrumbidgee River, north of Tharwa.

Is it worth trying to get rid of this before it spreads too far? Oenothera stricta is more common and very widespread (the two hybridise) and Oenothera lindheimeri is a garden escape we are trying to stop.

It is worth trying - but given its generally northern coastal NSW distribution I was wondering how frost sensitive it may be. I will be tackling the wormwood next week and am away till 20 June. If it is still thriving after that then I think we should target it for removal - but I suspect it may all ready be widespread along the Murrumbidgee.

The plants are not thriving at the moment, and are in a somewhat degraded state, sort of frazzled and weather worn. The plant in this sighting was from April, and it was one of the best I could find.

I can relate to that.

In the interests of science I have added a photo of a typical specimen of the plant, in its current condition, in early winter.

Its relative, Oenothera stricta subsp. stricta is looking much healthier despite a few frosts.
