The fruitbody is a truffle and may be buried or protrude above the soil. These truffles are globular to elongated, sometimes with an irregular outline and grow to several centimetres in maximum dimension. The surface colour ranges from yellow to brown, possibly with reddish tinges (sometimes showing as red bruising when cut or damaged. The inside is white to brown and a look with a handlens (or a camera's macrolens) will reveal the inside to be made up of an abundance of tiny chambers .
Several species are known in Australia, they are introduced fungi and are found growing with introduced pine trees, with which they form symbiotic associations.

The look and the occurrence with pines should make the genus easily recognizable.
