Significant sighting

MichaelBedingfield noted:

16 Sep 2014

This is a rare orchid and is mentioned in Action Plan 27, the ACT Woodland Strategy. It is regarded as endangered in Victoria. In a good year approximately 100 planets were counted in this part of Tuggeranong Hill Reserve. They had various colours and shapes, indicating a healthy population. I'm not an expert in these matters, but I've been told that it is the largest know population in the Canberra area.

User's notes

A pink/mauve/purple donkey orchid. Growing Yellow Box/Red Gum Grassy Woodland. The photos are not new but the population has continued to be healthy in recent years.

There's quite a nice population on Mt Taylor which appears in some years, and it has been found in small numbers on Coolemon Ridge and in a few other localities, but this sounds like a large healthy population which I would be interested in seeing myself.

I'm not sure that early November is the best time for them.... maybe a bit later there would be more to see. I will check on them at the time. However, I would be very glad to show them to you both. Let's hope there is some more rain in spring to give them a bit of a boost!

They're certainly around the area. I know of a population on private property along Smiths Rd, just outside the ACT border.
