Loosen the ground with a fork and you will probably find the roots (rhizomes) are quite extensive. The original plant also had a lot of seeds so they could have grown too. It would be interesting to see which method of spreading is happening. NSW Weedwise says "Asparagus fern primarily reproduces from seed, but can also spread vegetatively from rhizomes."
