This resprout interests me, because in the previous season, I found zero seedpods, at any stage of development, on any of the blue devils whose location I am aware of in Ainslie-Majura (most but not all fairly close to Bragg St Park), and many died off around December. So one coming back is encouraging. I wonder if it was the dry period last spring that caused the problem, or something more sinister.
Avery, the devils go dormant after seeding; young soft growth appears in spring from rhizomes unless conditions are not favorable which could be drought or competition from dense grass growth after 3 LaNina years. Young shoots are also prone to grazing.
I know, have been watching them in that area since 2020. The ones along paths that I monitor starting around now were looking fine up to Oct (2023), but never produced seedpods, and some of them just died off above ground, while others remained green but did not develop pods (even green ones). I have a pic of one going blue at the tips of its stems from 15 Dec 2023, something I haven't see before. Haven't found any resprouting of that one yet (but it's harder to find).
