User's notes

Planted along edge of water course. The second and third photographs show leaf stems and leaves of 2 Geranium sp planted along the water course. I collected the material shown on the right hand side from the plant shown in first photograph which I think is Geranium solanderi var. solanderi and material on the left hand side from a Geranium which I think is Geranium retrorsum.

Geranium species I think, I’m always suspicious of this genus.

thanks Ciaran. I think it is either G retrosum or G solanderi; I collected seeds from Mt Majura grassy woodland and cultivated in my garden for revegetation projects such as the heavily degraded bottom of this drainage line.

To tell the difference between these two species look at the hairs on the stems. . Need close up photo. See pics in VicFlora.

Barb, it has the long hairs; I'm not not sure whether I have the equipment for a close-up photograph; I'll try.

Okay I took photos of the 2 Geranium sp that we planted along the water course. The species which I think is G. solanderi var. solanderi and which is shown on the main photograph and on the right hand side of the 2nd and 3rd photos is the more common species planted and there are only a couple of specimens of the other Geranium species with the more deeply divided leaves. Since we planted the 2 Geranium species, their frequency doesn't reflect natural condition or recruitment. The original ecological community before destruction and degradation was most likely 'Tall Grassy Woodland'.

I wonder whether there are other features of which I can take photos for id; it would be great if we can get the correct identifications for my reporting.

any new thoughts?

Not sure how you managed this Waltraud, but the plant on the left is G.retrorsum and the one of the right is G.solanderi.

Great photos Waltraud, and these hairs are the best feature to use as they are always there, don't need flowers or seeds... or judgement about degree of lobes on leaves. On retrorsum the hairs are appressed to the stem and backwards pointing ( hence the species name) and on solanderi they are "patent" which means sticking out.

hi Tapirlord
I used a magnifying lens for my iPhone camera which allows me to take close close-ups; I picked the leaf of the geranium shown in the main photo which I thought is G solanderi (confirmed) and a leaf of the geranium which I thought is G. retrosum. As abread111 pointed out, the hairs on the leaf stems are quite different.

Sure, happy with G.solanderi now.
