User's notes

Recruit from a stand of Black Gum, Eucalyptus aggregata that have been planted decades ago along the bottom of the drainage line parallel to Valour Park. I spotted several recruits of Black Gum in the vicinity of the photographed specimen. The species is rare however it is not a local species.

This species is local to the ACT and may well have occured on Mt Majura previously. It is this population which is not local.

Many thanks, C
We need advice on whether or not to remove the recruits. What is your view? whom to contact?
One botanist suggests removal because recruits are from a planted crop....

So personally given how small and fragmented the ACT population of this species is, I would leave the seedlings be (If you read the EPBC listing it actually states that one threat to this species is low recruitment). I wouldn't think that this species has particularly high potential to damage communities within Mt Majura nature reserve.

The other thing to consider is that given that E.aggregata is a nationally threatened species, it has protections under law so removing plants from this population (despite the fact it has been planted), may be illegal. I would leave the population for now and seek advice from one of the Governemnt flora ecologist (Emma Cook would be a good person for comment).

Many thanks for your thoughts C, similar to the senior ranger at Canberra Nature Park north - I haven't heard from Emma C.
Interesting to hear about low recruitment - I will record those in the Mt Majura nature reserve east of the Fair which I noticed over the past 2 years.
