@donhe the pinched/diamond/conical shape held firm despite collection, transport, humidity, and the first part of dissection, plus the black and brown specs were pretty symmetrically placed and held fast like they were woven or set in place. It didn’t have the smooth curve like the ribbed case moth cases I’ve seen before and was smaller too.

@Hejor1 : Are we to understand that the black thing with the round brown head in photos 1,2, and 3, came out of the H. nigrescens case shown in photo4? Is the net background the same in both photos 1 and 4, i.e. are photos 1,2, and 3 are at much higher magnification than photos 4 and 5? The black thing does not look much like that in Andy's photo shown in

@donhe @RogerF - these are the same organism. The grid is 1mm squares in photos 1-4. I collected the case and waited 4 weeks but it didn’t hatch so I pulled it apart. All specimens taken apart were done one at a time on a clean surface so no intermingling.

@RogerF and @donhe i can’t find any ribbed case moth cases which have the shape in this one - they all have a smooth curve.

The conical decorated case is typical of early instars of H. nigrescens, see
