Driving along, and then trying to continue driving safely when right next to me, at window level, are two stunning raptors. Pulling over, my heart pumping with excitement, I discovered that my camera doesn't like photographing clearly through the windscreen, so missed the best shots of Raptor on Fence Post. However, getting out of the car helped me get some better photos. The pair swooped and flew and glided at ground level - even entering cattle yards - then to the top of a stand of pines. Looking at their photos, I found one was carrying a stick. So I've marked this as a nesting site (happy to be corrected). My amateur guess is a pair of spotted harriers . . .
I can't describe how excited and amazed I was! Driving off, I kept thinking that it didn't matter if the photos didn't turn out - I'd been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, and had just witnessed a stunning sight. And I had no idea what birds of prey they were - they just looked a bit unusual . . .
