This is a moss. According to the ANBG and other sources, mosses are plants. However, lichen are not. You have grouped mosses, lichens, liverworts, etc together. I’m confused by this. I’m only recording plants. And I’m keeping my beautiful moss because ANBG says it’s a plant. But I won’t record lichen even though you have them in the same group.
Thanks Lisa we have grouped them together as many reporters would be unsure the difference between all three, when determining a category to place their sighting in, but there is a subcategory that does differentiate lichens separately from moses and liverworts
I would also add that mosses tend to be covered by a different group of experts. Most plant folk are only interested in vascular plants, while those interested bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, hornworts etc) are a different group. Including them with lichens doesn’t really make sense taxonomically, but it does seperate them from vascular plants which makes it easier for mods. If you think about it “plants” are a whole kingdom worth of organisms so there is a whole lot of diversity and plenty of room for specialists!
