Growing at the base of a tree (should have taken a picture from a greater distance to illustrate this, but didn't). I *think* it was in flower.
OK added some pictures illustrating further colonies right next to the first one ... I seem to have failed to record a picture of that showing that it does not climb the tree, but just sits at the base.

I'm thinking this looks a lot more like E.hastata, its a much bulkier plant.

Tapirlord, perhaps you are right - i do have problems telling them apart from photos.
Avery, both Einadia hastata and E nutans are good ground cover; we frequently encounter them particularly E. nutans when we removed cleavers under trees. They are perennial plants with a woody root and grow happily in the shade of trees; they love wet and may shrink in drought but will recover. La Ninas were good for them; however, bigger and faster-growing plants such as Cleavers were competing.

There are more colonies scattered around for maybe 50m uphill to the SE (did not make a serious attempt to ascertain the area)
