User's notes

I am wondering if this is an ant nest? Managed to capture picture of the ants running in and out of the log and have added the picture of the ant. Possibly shiny coconut ant?

Hi Alice, sorry, but I can't be sure what species of ant this is from the photos. My best guess would be Myrmecorhynchus emeryi but there are one or two other things it could be too. It is possible that your other photo does show its nest, but the wood particles could also be from beetles working their way through the log. Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon

thank you I will head on down and try to get better photos apologies they were moving so fast! It was also unclear to me whether they were in fact connected to the interesting material at the base of the log. I will investigate further and report back :) cheers Alice
