I had only just started my walk and I heard a loud screeching sound in a tree only five metres in front of me. I noticed a Brushtail Possum holding onto the tree, it seemed unusual to find one out during the day. The possum was quite weak and it let go with its front legs and hung upside down by its back legs and then fell head first onto the ground. I called the local Wildcare to see if they were interested in caring for it and they were onsite within 30 minutes. After they'd given it a quick examination, I was told it appeared to have eaten rat poison and there wasn't much that could be done for it, apparently it was quite thin and had not been feeding for quite a while. They said it was a young male, and they took it away to euthanize. Its a shame to see this sort of thing happening to our wildlife.
