Hi Glossy Gal, Thanks for posting this sighting. Actually this is a Tree Goanna, Varanus varius, aka 'Lace Monitor'. It has broad, bold, dark and light stripes on the lips and below the jaw where Rosenbergs has fine markings. Likewise the outer half of the tail would be broad banded if you have any more photos showing the tail. Well spotted

Thank you for your comprehensive post. Sorry I don't have a tail shot...I'm a birder! I'll get one next time. I only saw it because I was standing very still watching glossy blacks. It didn't see me until I reached for my camera.

They know and like birds too, in their way.
If it is calmly watching you to begin with, you can usually get as close as you want, even within touching distance, by patiently following 'stalking' behaviours (move diagonally, don't face or approach directly, move slowly, get low, pause occasionally).
