With gum trees it's beneficial for IDing to get as many photos of different parts of the plant as possible, especially leaves, buds and fruit.

Just a question here, not being facetious, but how do we know this isn't Eucalyptus rossii? I can even see scribbles on the trunk in that photo and there are no other identifying features provided. Just curious as to what I'm missing.

From my perspective, this ID is likely but not 100% certain, becuase as you say, we really need images of foliage and fruit to make a definitive ID (depending on spcies of couse). I went with mannifera over rossii as the new bark in the foreground of the photo is a creamy white colour (Yellow in Rossii), though it will become darker with age in both species. Otherwise it could in theory be either (the scribbles can occur on both species I believe, if anything the faint scribble suggest mannifera, Rossii tends to have a greater denisty). I would encourage anyone who is trying to differentiate Rossii & mannifera in the field to use the "rub test" as the bark of mannifera should give off a fine powder (doesn't occur in Rossii). The compressed bark at the base of the limbs "wrinkly armpits" is another thing to look for (diagnostic of Rossii).

Thanks for the extra info Tapirlord, next time I'm in Bluetts I might hunt this tree down and see what I find.

Hi guys. today I went and had another look at this tree, and as a result have just posted some new photos which may help in the ID. I couldn't see any powder on the bark after rubbing the bark in several places, there was only one under arm wrinkles, not especially pronounced, and, low down, 2-3 minor squiggles. Hope all this helps

Thanks Barrie, have had a look at the new sighting (you can add those extra photos to this sighting if you like), and I'd be inclined to say it is a Scribbly Gum, as my field guide says that the Brittle Gum only has a maximum of 7 buds per umbel. The fruit also fit the description of having a flattened, reddish top.

Many thanks for all your comments. How do I combine the two sightings, please?

Probably best to delete one but I'll leave that to Michael, Duplicate record probably doesn't really hurt given the location. @MatthewFrawley
