Male P. entrecasteuxii - getting the reddish -orange breeding colours under neck and on belly. This viviparous species mates in autumn and females retain sperm until the following spring when the ova are fertilized. Thought to be an adaptation to cold environments - instead of finding a mate and mating at the end of a long cold hibernation the female can get on with feeding and growing the fertilized eggs.
