It is rather like L. australica, but the wing venation and hind leg give the game away. It certainly seems to be in the Sphecidae, which means close to bees, but I can't think of a genus with a notch in the eye margin. Perhaps I am imagining that feature.

Thanks, Michael...apologies for the lack of quality on the images. A touch too close for the long lens I had on. L. australica was the best I could come up with...hopefully it will return. It was flying through the garden and landed on the garden stake, then walked up to the top to investigate. Then took off to the wind. There have been a couple of mud wasps around the garden, so might be in company. Will try to get better evidence... Thanks again.

Crabronidae rather than Sphecinae, from the shape of the abdomen which is petiolate in the Sphecinae
