I know it looks a bit weird but I keep coming back to it and I really can't think what else it could be, this species is also very common at this location.

I think the confirmation is a little hasty if I may say so, as I can't see any particuarly strong ID features for placing this as bedfordia. Without these I'd prefer this sighting to remain in unidentified. I don't know the area well and haven't been back since, but I do know blanket leaf and I this does not look like any living specimen of that species I have seen.

Okay fair enough, I'll remove it and leave it as unidentified. Not really sure what other possibilities there are in that area, I know it doesn't particularly suit Bedfordia but definitely the closest I've been able to find.

I think it has to be in asteraceae, and of that family there are two large species that exhibit a shrub/tree form which such long leaves. (Bedfordia or Olearia megalophylla). Of the two, Bedfordia has lighter green leaves with wrinkles and that charactersisc covering of woolly hairs (look at the crown of the foliage in say Bedfordia arborescens (Blanket Bush) ). So I don't think this can be Befordia, hence Olearia megalophylla. I imagine the plant may be stressed (and old actually), given this montane forest habitat is probably a tad to wet for it.

Olearia megalophylla plants that come from wetter areas tend to have a more grey-green foliage, see Olearia megalophylla (Large-leaf Daisy-bush)

Yes, I do think it is a more plausible ID than Bedfordia. Given your experience here you're probably on the right track with this one.
