Looks very much like Miturga agelenina (Southern Prowling Spider) Whyte and Anderson page 184 and 188 - but Miturga species are difficult to Id from photos
Ah, the eyes have it! Thanks for the ID, Michael. It was in heavy undergrowth (mostly Leptospermum multicaule) that I was slashing in preparation for the fire season. If that is their preferred habitat it's not surprising that they haven't been seen often here.
