Curly leaves and straight ones - the culms? Some sheath bases tinged red.
There is a ligule. Occurs at this site as old tussocks with dead greyish bases of old growth. At a damp site under the power line. Have not seen any scabrid leaf edges but it does feel a little rough to the touch. Need to wait for flowering to occur to confirm id.
I now think this is red-anther wallaby grass at a young stage - look at the ligule. When I went back there I could not find any Carex but there was red-anther wallaby grass and I have seen curly leaves on that species elsewhere.
Yes, but there is an awful lot of in between with regard to those two taxa (the entire order poales). I would almost suggest that both species are present in the photo.
