Hi Michael. I would suggest this is not Coptotermes, but rather Heterotermes, in the H. ferox group. The long, parallel-sided oblong head and long, straight-sided, un-toothed mandibles support this. It is "very common in the Canberra area" and "usually feeds on weathered wood". This description fits very well the situation in which I found them - under a small (approx 1 m x 30 cm piece of highly weathered fallen timber at the edge of woodland/grassland). All my information comes from "Termites in the Canberra Region" (2nd edition) by J.A.L Watson (1988).
