It looks very much like Crypsiphona ocultaria and yet the darker and more brown forewngs seem to be very unusual. I will never forgive myself for not getting an underside photo.
I think it may be a kind of 'tranlucent' effect which I have noticed in some specimens. I suggest it doesn't look like any of the unnamed Crypsiphona spp. from ANIC shown on Bold Systems 4. C. amaura and C. melanosema look different and seem to be confined to WA. The ALA has C. tasmanica which is Tasmanian, but doesn't look to have tha darker areas as shown here. Without an underside shot I doubt we could separate C. ocultaria and C. tasmanica.
Thanks Ian. I should have at least tried to take an underside shot but I was not thinking straight. If I ever see it again I definitely will try to do that. Its pattern seems identical to Crypsiphona ocultaria but the colouring was very different. There were "normal" Crypsiphona ocultaria sitting not too far from it and they just looked so very different and all of them very grey while this one was definitely brown. I could not see any hint of translucency and the moth seemed quite fresh.
