User's notes

I've seen MattM's photos of amazing orchids (is it a bearded orchid?), wondered if I'd ever see one in my lifetime - and today, there it was! Almost missed it. Very excited.

This is Calochilus paludosus, which has a reddish beard that is open enough for you to see the rest of the labellum beneath it. Quite a widespread species throughout SE Australia, but we don't have many records on Canberra Nature Map, so this is a good sighting for database. If you keep an eye out you might also find the purple beard orchid, Calochilus platychilus.

Thank you. Not sure when I'll be back there - I so nearly did not see this one. But I will look out next time. Really quite beautiful.
