It is a weed, so worth grubbing out.

No worries. Today I found a second larger patch which I will do as well.

I'm pretty sure this is Tritonia gladiolaris rather than Freesia's. We have these and Freesias growing in our garden and these are flowering now, whereas Freesias are finished flowering. Flowers look and smell different to Freesias and this plant looks much more like Tritonia with the lines in the flowers and taller stems and leaves.

Thanks. Can I assume that Tritonia gladiolaris is an exotic weed and that, whatever its name, grubbing the two patches out would be a good thing?

Yep - the Tritonia is also an exotic weed. Both it and the Freesia can produce 'baby' bulbs/corms in the soil (can't recall which they have) so you'll need to try to get all these as well - each bulb/corm will usually have at least a tiny leaf growing from it.

Natureguy - you're correct, the photo is of Tritonia, though both Tritonia and Freesia are present in the area. The Freesia was flowering in early September.
