Ooops! Looks like something trod on it.... This mycorrhizal fungus is associated with the roots of nearby plants, usually trees, so if you're able to identify nearby trees it helps build our understanding of these associations. This association helps both partners. This genus is related to the 'bolete' type fungi even though it has gills instead of pores. If trying to identify to species it is necessary to note the colour of the mycelium (fungal threads) at the base of the stem (stipe); they are either white or yellow.
