Hi Stuart We have no-one who is expert on Molluscs, but this is a very interesting & attractive specimen. If you can find a species name for it that would be terrific.

No worries Michael, will do, though the quest may be snail-paced in the short term.....

Preliminary squizz has confirmed this is definitely what they call a 'semi-slug, a species of air-breathing land snail which are terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family Helicarionidae. This species is either Helicarion mastersi or H. cuvieri as a 2018 revision stated that only two species of semi-slug inhabit the east coast of Australia. Habitat includes leaf litter in Eucalyptus woodland. Looking in comparison to pics available on the net I think this one looks like Helicarion nigra. Happy to discuss before suggesting....

I'm not expert enough to make a call on the species, but I think Helicarion sp. would be a good result. What do you think?

What a beautiful little critter! As far as I can work out, it's a first record for Black Mountain.

Glad 'She' is still revealing her secrets Rosemary! I actually took this pic two days after I discovered Maratus calcitrans there!

species confirmed by Michael Shea of the Snails of Australia Facebook site. He kindly suggested: Beautiful Helicarion cuvieri Family Helicarionidae. Animal colour is extremely variable. Ranges from Tasmania through Victoria to central Great Dividing Range of NSW. Was once found as far north as Newcastle however the northernmost coastal population from Sydney to Newcastle (once called Helicarion leopardinus) is now extinct, possibly due to global warming.
