User's notes

Colonies occur over an area of approximately 5 ha extending on all sides of the photographed one. Rosettes have been estimated at about 7,000 over about 25 colonies. This season a total of 427 flowers were counted in eight colonies. Flowering was mostly associated with colonies receiving water additional to incident rainfall. Some herbivory of flowers was apparent, and protection was afforded by longer grass or shrubs (esp. Melichrus). Rosettes occur on scalded soil but flowering tends not to occur on the most degraded sites.

That's a lot of plants. And a lot of counting! Interesting to know that extra water increases flowering.
