We saw some that had wings, dont know if these were Queen ants

Ant colonies produce reproductive winged individuals (both male and female) called plates that start new colonies

Hi Speedsta, Michael is right about the winged ants. Most types of ants tend to have a single queen, who produces all the eggs that turn into workers (the ones you normally see, without wings) but can also produce eggs that turn into reproductive ants, both males and females, and both with wings. Ants with wings are called "alates" (not plates - I think Michael's spell checker probably "fixed" this word for him!). Cheers, Jon
