This genus is mycorrhizal, that is it's associated with nearby plants/trees so thank you for the information about the gum trees. This genus is in the group of fungi that include the 'bolete' type fungi, though these ones have gills rather than pores. Sometimes you may see them with gills that seems to be transitioning towards pores!
