User's notes

In revegetation area. The soft herb is not aromatic and smaller plants are less than 30 cm tall. Biggest plants only 40 cm tall. The root is a little aromatic like Brassicaceae. Compound flowers, each tiny floret 5 petalled, contained in a tubular 'calyx' of multiple overlapping segments, overall about 5 x 2 mm. Feathery foliage, much branched, not aromatic.

A photo of a single leaf on a background, eg black t-shirt, would help to ID this to species level.

This reminds me of something that's not a Senecio, but I can't figure out what (?Bidens??). I'll do some exercise (!) and collect a specimen in a day or so.

Just added 2 extra images. Firstly the stem, side branches, leaves and terminal inflorescences. Then a close up of feathery leaves: leaves are long and narrow (0.5 to 1mm thick), 3 (possibly 4) levels of leaf branch, upper surface of leaf has a midline groove which is deepest on the thickest leaves. Good work on the Dwarf Marigold ID Rosemary - all of the little features (like single ray floret, bracts around flowerhead on long slender stems, height to 50 cm) add up to a good match.

I'm pretty sure it's Schkuhria pinnata (Asteraceae).

Thanks Rosemary - seems to be a low impact naturalised species

Thanks Rosemary - as far as I can tell the Panicum problem is largely presently confined to inner Canberra. i think it is being spread by mowing and use of infected hay in restoration works- how do you tell capillare from hillmannii?

Collected a herbarium specimen this morning (RW Purdie 11948) and can now confirm it is Schkuhria pinnata. The Panicum capillare growing in the same area (herbarium specimen RWP 11949) is more of a problem.

Whoops - my collection number for the Panicum capillare is RWP 11950
