This genus is mycorrhizal, that is it is growing in association with the roots of nearby plants (myco - fungus rrhizal - roots - fungus roots!!) They are also related to the 'bolete' type fungi even though this genus has gills instead of pores. Note on image two there is in infection by another fungus.
