A good photo that shows the autumn breeding colours on this male . This species mates in autumn. Sperm is stored in internally over winter by the females with fertilization occurring in early spring. Iit is thought that in cold areas this strategy allows females (and males) to just get on with their lives (putting on condition and growing embryos) in spring without having to spend time searching for mates.
