I've ventured to confirm this as C. thomsoni after looking at a whole drawer full of that species in the ANIC. As Stuart says, the beetle on the left in the 2nd pic is C. australasiae.
Good call Kim, Allen was adamant also. In my relative naivety I thought i'd encountered a new one and was disappointed it wasn't, but hey, one soon learns that 'It is what it is'. Luckily, last year in my first season I encountered numerous variations of T. variabilis and the gross variations are both in patterning and colour!
